Species Tulips are super reliable and almost maintenance-free. Cousins to the larger and more usually grown garden cultivars, these wild tulips will make a colourful impact early in the year and don't require lifting or cutting back. Once planted they will return year after year and, coming originally from the mountains of Turkey, can withstand all that even the worst British winter can throw at them. Taller varieties like 'turkestanica' will easily hold their own at the front of a border amongst the early growth of your summer herbaceous perennials and smaller varieties such as 'Little Beauty' are ideal for underplanting around larger shrubs and under deciduous trees.
